The typical Scottish breakfast


  • This breakfast is particular by the quantity of aliments for a morning. You can have a plate composed of a slice of bacon, pudding and meat. Also, there are some mushrooms and tomatoes without to forget the fried egg and the potato bread. It depends on you taste and your appetite to savour this meal. The drinks are mainly a cup of tea, coffee, milk and an orange juice glass.



  • Another idea for a complete breakfast, is  porridge. It is a healthy and nutritious breakfast perfect to start a new day. It is easy and quick to prepare it before to go in University. You can buy oats everywhere for £1-£2 under the form below:

-For greedy people, a full spoon of NUTELLA
-Put it in the microwave for 1.30 minutes...IT IS READY !

  • The scotch soup is composed essentially of mutton, pearl barley, dried peas, carrots, cabbage, onion, turnip, leek and with chopped parsley. It is very good and light to start a meal.

  • Another speciality : scotch eggs, steak/chicken stake, cheese scones and sausage rolls,   are popular and not expensive. You can find it either in supermarkets, bakery stores or pubs. 




Obviously, it is only some examples that we offer you, you are going to discover other foods original as well as good. 


Main courses

  • The national dish of Scotland is called Haggis. It's a filled stomach of a sheep containing: chopped lungs, heart and liver, that also come from sheep. This is mixed with onion, spice, flour of oats and fat from sheep. The taste is strong but with the mash potatoes and carrots, it is delicious.


Easy to cook, only 12 minutes in the oven and it is ready. After cooking the stomach, potato and turnips (tatties and neeps) are usually served with the traditional dish. 
You can find it in supermarkets (£1.70) under the form below. Obviously, the vegetarian can also taste it with an adapted version. 




  • During your study year in Scotland, you will see bakery stores such as Greggs, and you can get cheaper rapid food like the scotch pie. Really popular, it is a little pie with a mix of lean lamb, pinch of mace or nutmeg, salt and pepper as well as a gravy sauce inside. Original meal, it is served deep fried and beans.

  • Salmon and whisky sauce is a typical Scottish meal, the salmon might be fished the morning and ready in your plate for the dinner.  Really nutritious, salmon is often served with green beans, mash potatoes and a sauce very delicious. It is more expensive but you can go to the restaurant and enjoy it with your friends/family. 





  • Not to be forgotten! Of course, the inescapable fish and chips !! sliced, put in the oil and then salted, the  fries are good but are high in calories...The fish  has the same treatment, it is also fried.

Desserts

There are so many desserts that you can taste and all with different savours some more surprising than others. We have selected certain to give you envy to give in to the temptation... 


  • The cranachan or cream crowdie is a famous scottish dessert with oatmeal, double cream, drambuie and accompagned with fresh raspberries. It sounds heavy but the fruits light it and perferct to finish your lunch or diner.






  • A cake but not a simple one, with carrots...Popular under the name carrot cake, it is a very good dessert and if you don't want to bake, you can buy it in Starbucks for £3-£4. Really easy to bake it, here is the recipe:


Ingredients:
8 oz (2 cups) wholemeal flour 

8 oz (2 cups) brown sugar 
4 teaspoons baking powder 
2 teaspoons cinnamon  
1 teaspoon salt 
Half a cup melted butter or oil 
4 eggs 
Half cup chopped walnuts 
14 ounces (3 cups) finely grated carrot 
Zest of an orange

Ingredients for Icing: 
Half pound (two cups) icing sugar
3 oz cream cheese (under half a cup)
One teaspoon vanilla essence (extract)
3 oz butter (Three quarters of a cup)

Method: 
Mix the dry ingredients together and then add the walnuts and carrots, mixing well. Beat the eggs and them and the butter (or oil) and mix well. Pour the mixture into two, one pound rectangular loaf tins or one, two pound loaf tin. A nine inch round cake tin can also be used.
Bake for an hour in a pre-heated oven at 350F/180C/Gas Mark 4
Make the icing by beating the ingredients together and, once the cake has cooled, decorate the top and the side with the icing.

  • The cheesecake is also a very good dessert from England. It is composed of  double cream, sugar, vanilla extract, digestive biscuits and raspberries or strawberries. You will see it automatically if you go to the restaurant or pizza hut. It is not heavy and interesting to try it to finish your meal. The price is approximately £3-4.






  •  The sticky toffee pudding is good especially for greedy people. One advice : eat it such as a main meal because it is heavy and difficult to finish it. The vanilla ice cream and a drink help you to savour it and enjoy it. It is a cake composed essentially of chocolate and with a warm chocolate sauce. This dessert is sold in most pubs and restaurants. 




Snack 

  • A typical snack is the fried Mars bar ! It is really original to eat it, so if you want a new experience try it. For £1, you buy your Mars bar and the sale assistant cooks it in front of your eyes.  You can savour it !

  • Irn Bru is a very popular soft in Scotland, actually the most popular one, made in Cumbernauld. The drink is orange with a slight hint of citrus. The secret recipe is only known by two people, and  this is stored in a bank vault.
